Living in a tower block may be different to living in a conventional house or flat. For example, there is added security to flats above the ground floor, there are internal lifts and rubbish chutes, caretaking staff and cleaners.

All tenants share responsibility for their tower block's environment. Some blocks even have their own residents' association.

Security measures

Tower blocks often have better security due to their design and security systems.

It's important to not let unknown individuals into the building and avoid propping open the door. For added security, some blocks are equipped with electronic entry systems and CCTV.

Special maintenance for utilities

Tower blocks require specific maintenance in the following areas:

  • lifts
  • ventilation systems
  • water pumps
  • window cleaning services
  • lightning protection

We manage contracts for these services and conduct regular checks. Please report any faults to us.

Due to fire risks, tower blocks do not have gas supply. All appliances, including cookers, must be electric. Heating is provided through an electric system.

TV and mobile phone reception is typically excellent in tower blocks due to the presence of masts.

Communal areas

Communal areas provide the main access to and from the building. Our caretaking staff maintain these areas, including lifts, lobbies, and stairs. Residents are encouraged to help keep these areas tidy. Information about caretaking services is available in each tower block's foyer.

Fire safety equipment is provided in communal areas for your use in an emergency.

Please do not feed pigeons in the communal areas as they can cause mess and distress to everyone.

Laundry facilities

Some tower blocks include laundry facilities. Check with your Tenancy Management Officer for availability and token purchases.

Please be considerate of neighbours and avoid using washing machines during late or early hours.

Spin dryers are available in some blocks, and you can dry clothes on balconies or in the cupboard with your immersion heater.

Rubbish disposal

Rubbish chutes lead to a ground floor bin store. Ensure your rubbish is bagged in small parcels for easy disposal.

Avoid disposing of large items through the chute. Contact us for bulky item collection arrangements, as detailed on our Bulky Waste Collections page. Use the lift for transporting bulky items to the ground floor.

Pet policy

To keep a pet in a tower block, our permission is required. Dogs and cats are generally not allowed, except for guide dogs for the visually impaired.
