Oxford City Council has launched a photography competition to highlight Oxford’s environmental work and promote a new sustainability strategy.
Photographers are invited to submit pictures representing a sustainable Oxford. This could include pictures of the city’s wildlife sanctuaries, hydro facilities, wildflower meadows or solar projects.
The pictures will be put to a public vote, and the submission with the most votes will win a hamper of locally-produced food.

The best pictures will also be used in the City Council’s new Sustainability Strategy, which will outline how Oxford can meet new targets to tackle climate change.
The draft strategy, which will be consulted on early next year, follows the commissioning of an independent review of Oxford’s environmental credentials – the first of its kind in the UK.
The review, called The Oxford Sustainability Index, compares Oxford’s environmental performance against other UK cities in terms of sustainable transport, energy efficiency, local energy generation, flooding and biodiversity.
It found that Oxford scores well in lowering carbon dioxide emissions and improving land use, but less well in making use of renewable energy and sustainable transport.
Oxford City Council is the first local authority in the UK to commission an independent review into an area’s environmental credentials.
As well as underpinning the City Council’s Sustainability Strategy, the index will also underpin the Local Plan, which defines how Oxford develops in terms of housing, jobs and facilities over the next 20 years.

The City Council launched the photography competition today (19/9) and photographers have until 10am on Monday 26 September to enter. Terms and conditions are available on request.
