Each household should have a small indoor caddy and a larger outdoor caddy for food waste. Flats will use a shared red bin. Learn what you can and cannot put into your food waste caddy.

These food items can be put into your food caddy cooked or uncooked:

  • bread and pastries
  • dairy products
  • fruit and vegetables (including fruit stones)
  • meat, fish, bones
  • cooking oils and fats (collect in a plastic bottle and place inside the caddy or bin)
  • tea bags and coffee grounds (solid or liquid form)

These items must not be put in your food caddy:

  • compostable cups and packaging (use green rubbish bin)
  • vegware packaging (use green rubbish bin)
  • glass, non-food products, and packaging

Can I line the food caddy?

Lining your caddy is optional but can help keep it clean. Don't use black bags, crisp packets, or cloth bags. The liner you can use depends on where you live.

  • Oxford City, South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse, and West Oxfordshire - Food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion plant in Cassington where plastics are remove and the food is recycled into electricity and fertiliser. Use plastic carrier bags, supermarket bags, pedal bin liners, other plastic bags, or newspaper.
  • Cherwell - Food waste goes to a composting plant that can't remove plastic. Use only compostable liners or newspaper.
