Before you move into your new council home, there are a few things you need to do to get ready. We will also carry out checks and prepare the property before your moving-in date.

Prepare for your move

Before you move, you should:

  • give written notice at least 28 days before moving
  • arrange and pay for moving your belongings and furniture
  • tell your utility suppliers that you are moving, including gas, electricity, water and phone providers
  • tell our Council Tax team about your move - see Council Tax change of address
  • arrange contents insurance for your new home
  • update your electoral registration details - see How to register to vote
  • arrange mail redirection through the Post Office at least 7 days before you move

What we will do to get you ready

Before you move in, we will:

  • remove any rubbish or belongings left by the previous tenant
  • make sure the property is safe and secure
  • carry out any work needed to meet the Decent Homes Standard
  • deliver any furniture you have rented from the Council
  • give you information about your rent and any service charges
  • review the key points of your tenancy agreement with you
