Before moving into your new council home, there are some things you need to do and some things we will do to help you prepare.

What you need to do

Before you move, you should:

  • give written notice at least 28 days before moving
  • organise and pay for moving your belongings and furniture
  • tell your utility suppliers that you are moving (gas, electricity, water and phone)
  • tell our Council Tax team about your move - see Council Tax change of address
  • arrange contents insurance for your new home
  • update your electoral registration details - see How to register to vote for guidance
  • arrange mail redirection through the Post Office at least 7 days before you move

What we will do

Before you move in, we will:

  • review the key points of your tenancy agreement with you
  • remove any rubbish or belongings left by the previous tenant
  • make sure the property is safe and secure
  • carry out any work needed to meet the Decent Homes Standard
  • give you information about your rent and any service charges
  • deliver any furniture you have rented from the Council
