Paying your Council Tax by Direct Debit is the most convenient payment method. It's automated through your bank or building society and comes with the Direct Debit Guarantee for added security.

Setting up a Direct Debit to pay your Council Tax is straightforward and can be done online using our 'Change your council tax payment method' form.

Choose your payment date

Choosing a payment date is available exclusively to Direct Debit payers.

This flexibility allows you to align your payments with your finances.

When setting up your Direct Debit online you can choose a payment date of either the 1st, 5th, 15th, or 25th of each month.

What happens next

Once your Direct Debit for Council Tax is set up we'll confirm your new instalment plan with a bill.

You will receive at least 14 days' notice of any changes to your instalment amounts, which typically update annually in April.

If you have a joint current account

Usually, only one person is needed to authorise a Direct Debit when setting this up for a joint current (non-business) account so this can still be done online.

If your non-business current account requires more than one signature to authorise a Direct Debit for Council Tax you can request a paper form by sending an email to the Council Tax team at counciltax@oxford.gov.uk
