Work has started on an Oxford City Council-funded £41,500 refurbishment of East Oxford Astroturf.
The project will see the old surface, binding sand and underlay removed, before the base is levelled, and a new base mat, new sand and new top ‘carpet’ with markings for a five-a-side pitch are installed.
Contractors started work on the City Council’s astroturf on Thursday (21 July). The project is expected to be completed in early August.
The new astroturf includes a guarantee for eight years.
The City Council had to temporarily close the all-weather pitch earlier this year because damage and wear to the surface had caused it to become a health-and-safety concern.
The astroturf is on the grounds of East Oxford Primary School in Union Street. To avoid disruption, the City Council decided not to start work until the summer holidays. The school broke up for the holidays on Wednesday (20 July).
