Oxford’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Chewe Munkonge, will swap his mayoral chains for running shoes this weekend as he takes on his first-ever half marathon to raise money for Sobell House Hospice

The 13.1-mile challenge marks a personal milestone for the Lord Mayor, who has never previously completed a marathon or half marathon. Despite a demanding schedule of civic engagements, he has been fitting training around his mayoral duties, combining running and walking whenever possible in preparation for the event.

Sobell House Hospice provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families across Oxfordshire, helping people through some of life’s most difficult moments.

“Being Lord Mayor isn't just about wearing the chains of office; it's about making a difference in people's lives. This Sunday, I'll be swapping the mayoral chains for running shoes, not for a medal or a personal best, but for the patients and families supported by Sobell House Hospice.

“Every mile will be a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference. Oxford is a city with a big heart, and I hope people will support this wonderful cause. I'm running 13.1 miles, but the real journey is about giving hope, dignity and comfort to others.

“This will be my first half marathon, so there are definitely some nerves. My biggest concern is whether my legs will agree with my enthusiasm, but I’m determined to finish and raise as much as possible for this incredible charity.”

“I'm especially looking forward to seeing our community come together for such a fantastic event. Oxford has always been a city where we support one another, and I know that encouragement will keep me going all the way to the finish line.”

The Lord Mayor said he is particularly looking forward to the atmosphere on the day and the support of Oxford residents lining the route.

While the mayoral regalia will not be making an appearance on the course, Councillor Munkonge said he will be carrying the pride of representing Oxford and supporting Sobell House “every step of the way”.
