Work to improve the play area at Friar's Wharf in South Oxford is now complete, with the official reopening of the site as 'Emily's Playground'.
The improvement work began in May, following feedback from local residents, who wanted to see more equipment for younger children alongside improvements to make the play area more welcoming and attractive.
The refurbishment has updated the play area, with the installation of a range of new features, including:
- Two new multi-play climbers with slides: one for older children, and another for younger children
- A new swing for younger children
- A 3m-tall, coned rope climbing frame, suitable for children of different ages and abilities
- Seating in the park for families
- Removal of the large concrete mound, and old play equipment
The improvements were made possible following a generous donation from an Oxford resident, who wanted to create a legacy in memory of her late daughter, Emily Topf Abrams, who passed away in 2024, aged 42, following a blood clot.
To reflect this donation, the newly refurbished play area has been renamed 'Emily's Playground at Friar's Wharf'. The playground was officially reopened last week by Emily's family.
Additional funding for the project was also provided by Oxford City Council.
Groundworks for the project were carried out by ODS, while play area specialists HAGS supplied and installed the new equipment.
