Oxford City Council is reminding residents and visitors to dispose of their rubbish responsibly and help keep Port Meadow and the city's other parks and green spaces clean.
With warm weather expected to continue and with increased visitor numbers over the forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend, the council is encouraging everyone enjoying Oxford's outdoor spaces to use the bins provided or take their litter home.
Port Meadow is one of Oxford's most treasured open spaces, attracting thousands of visitors throughout the year. However, litter left behind after picnics, celebrations and day trips can have a serious impact on both the environment and local wildlife.
Litter can have devastating consequences for animals that live in or graze on Port Meadow. In recent years, two cows, including a seven-month-old calf, died after eating plastic bags, balloons and other discarded rubbish.
Only last week a bag of litter was dumped, and serious harm was only averted by the vigilance of the public and quick action of staff. Other grazing cattle and horses have suffered injuries from broken glass, while Council and ODS staff have rescued swans that became entangled in litter left behind by visitors.

Barbeques and fires are strictly forbidden on the Meadow. A dedicated barbeque area is provided at Wolvercote Picnic Area, accessed of Godstow Road.
Spending time outdoors, whether exercising, socialising or simply enjoying nature, is known to benefit both physical and mental wellbeing. Keeping these spaces clean helps ensure the whole community can enjoy them throughout the year.
Visitors should also be aware that dropping litter is an offence. Anyone caught littering could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice of £150.
Help protect Port Meadow and the city's green spaces by thinking twice before dropping rubbish and taking pride in keeping Oxford clean and green.
