"Today is a historic day for the people of Oxford, Oxfordshire and West Berkshire. The Government’s decision to create three new councils to serve our geography will simplify local government, save money and keep decision-making local, so each area can shape services around the specific needs of its residents and businesses.
"I understand that leaders in some other councils are disappointed that Government didn’t accept their alternative proposals for local government reorganisation. But Government has spent over six months assessing the hundreds of pages of evidence we all submitted – on service improvements, cost savings, financial strength, housing delivery and empowering local citizens – before making its decision. It has also consulted widely among residents, businesses and other stakeholders; and it’s made the right choice.
"I very much welcome the fact that all Oxfordshire and West Berkshire’s councils are committed to working collaboratively together, and with partners and communities, to deliver the three new councils and build the best possible future for our people and places."
Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council
