Council Leader Susan Brown has appointed new champions to support Oxford City Council’s work.

The role of the Champions is to use their expertise and engagement with key residents, businesses, and community groups.

By providing insight and advice, they will feed back to the City Council’s Cabinet Members to ensure informed decision-making on important matters.

The new Champions are:

  • Armed Forces & Veterans Champion – Councillor Mark Lygo
  • Cycling Champion – Councillor Louise Upton
  • Heritage Champion – Councillor Mary Clarkson
  • Events, Live Music & the Nighttime Economy Champion – Councillor James Taylor
  • Older People’s Champion – Councillor Trish Elphinstone
  • Small Business Champion – Councillor Chewe Munkonge
  • Vision Zero Champion – Councillor Chris Smowton

The positions are unpaid, and the Champions will continue to fulfil their duties as local councillors, representing their constituents.

Councillor Susan Brown announced the Champions at a Full Council meeting last night (13 July).

“We are very fortunate to have a range of different experience, expertise and enthusiasm amongst our elected councillors on Oxford City Council.

“Our Champions play an essential role in raising important issues on behalf of communities and specific groups with Cabinet Members.

“I’d like to thank them for their commitment and valuable contributions.”
