Due to the extreme heat forecast this week, Oxford City Council and ODS are introducing temporary changes to the waste collection service.

A red weather warning - the highest level - has been issued for parts of central and southern England and south-east Wales, effective from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 37°C widely, with some of the hottest locations potentially reaching 38°C to 40°C. Current forecasts indicate that the most extreme temperatures are likely to include Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

We apologise for any disruption these temporary arrangements may cause and thank residents for their understanding and patience.

Revised arrangements

Collection crews will begin work earlier than usual, with bin collections starting from 5am, one hour earlier than normal. Residents are asked to put their bins and bulky waste collections out the evening before their scheduled collection day.

Garden waste collections delayed

To support core waste services during the hot weather, garden waste collections will be temporarily rescheduled:

  • collections due on Tuesday 23 June or Wednesday 24 June will take place on Saturday 27 June
  • collections due on Thursday 25 June or Friday 26 June will take place on Monday 29 June

Suspending garden waste collections temporarily will allow us to reinforce the three main waste streams, as collection rounds are expected to take longer during periods of extreme heat.

Comment

"The safety and wellbeing of our crews is a top priority, particularly during periods of extreme heat. With temperatures expected to reach exceptional levels under the current red warning, these temporary changes will help ensure staff can continue to deliver essential services while minimising disruption to residents, and keeping safe and well.

“We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the community during this time of exceptional heat and encourage everyone to support our crews by putting bins out the night before their collection day."

Councillor Nigel Chapman, Cabinet Member for Citizen Focused Services and Council Companies
