Joint statement

Council leaders from across the Thames Valley including councils in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Swindon, today welcomed a proposal by Government that a spatial development strategy (SDS) is created for the region, which also includes Buckinghamshire, with the following statement:

“We are in discussions with Buckinghamshire on how best we work together to deliver our joint vision for the SDS. The SDS will address issues that are best planned at a regional scale and look at major infrastructure development to support economic growth, understanding green belt considerations and enable a plan for nature recovery.

“The SDS, while separate, has linkages to the devolution work that we are also continuing to pursue to ensure the best outcomes for our residents."

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council, added:

"Oxford City Council has long identified the need for a strategic plan for our region and we were centrally involved in developing an Oxfordshire 2050 Plan, which ultimately Oxfordshire's councils failed to reach agreement upon. Given Oxford's fundamental significance within the regional economy it is important the city has a clear voice in the development of the Spatial Development Strategy. We're also pleased to see Government's recognition that Swindon should be included as part of the Thames Valley strategic economic area."
