Jacksons Civil Engineering Group will be awarded the construction contract for the Oxpens River Bridge project by Oxford City Council.

Work is expected to start in spring this year (2026), marking a significant milestone in the city’s plans to improve sustainable transport and connectivity.

When complete, the bridge will provide a safe, traffic-free route for pedestrians and cyclists, linking West and South of Oxford to the City Centre via the bridge between Oxpens Meadow and Grandpont Nature Park.

It is a central element of the wider West End regeneration programme, and having been planned for over a decade, and designed to create a vibrant, accessible district that prioritises sustainable transport and green infrastructure. By improving walking and cycling connections, the bridge will help reduce car dependency, cut carbon emissions, and contribute to Oxford’s climate action targets.

Oxford City Council remains committed to delivering this vital infrastructure project and will continue to provide updates as work progresses.

Comment

"This is a major step forward for Oxford’s sustainable transport network. The Oxpens River Bridge will improve connectivity for residents and visitors while protecting the natural environment. I'm pleased that the revised design means more trees can be kept, ensuring the project respects and enhances Grandpont Nature Park."

Councillor Alex Hollingsworth, Cabinet Member for Planning and Culture
