While most people will be unwrapping presents or enjoying a calm Christmas morning, a committed group of ODS staff will be out across the city making sure public spaces stay clean and welcoming.

A team of around ten operatives, overseen by supervisor Endri Metaliu, will spend Christmas morning carrying out essential street-cleaning duties, including litter picking, emptying public bins, and removing fly-tipping. Their work forms part of ODS’s year-round effort to keep Oxford’s busiest areas in good condition, even during the quietest moments of the festive season.

This year’s Christmas Day operation will concentrate on several high-traffic neighbourhoods, including:

  • Cowley Road, from Magdalen Road to The Plain, with attention to adjoining side streets up to St Mary’s Road

  • St Clement’s Street and London Place

  • Iffley Road, from The Plain to Howard Street, with a focus on maintaining tidy shopfronts.

The team will be deployed with small sweepers and collection vehicles to ensure that any overnight debris, discarded waste, or fly-tipped items are cleared before most residents begin their celebrations.

Comments

“Huge thanks go to the staff who spend Christmas morning working on behalf of the city. Their dedication represents public service at its finest, and their efforts help ensure Oxford continues to look its best throughout the festive period.”
Councillor Nigel Chapman, Cabinet Member for Citizen Focused Services and Council Companies

“I actually enjoy working on Christmas Day because it makes me feel proud of what we do. We arrive to streets that need attention, and by the end of the shift everything is clean and shining again. When the sweepers are full and the vans are loaded, it’s a good feeling you know you’ve made a difference. The city is quiet, calm, and you still see people out for their early-morning walks or run, which gives the day a special atmosphere.”
ODS Supervisor Endri Metaliu

Thanks to the ODS team’s commitment, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a clean and attractive cityscape over the Christmas holidays, with minimal disruption from waste or litter.
