On Saturday (1 November 2025), Botley Road businesses will launch a temporary pop-up shop on Broad Street, giving them a city centre presence during the ongoing road closure.

The initiative, led by Oxford City Council with support from Network Rail, aims to support affected traders and boost visibility during the festive season as the shop is located on Broad Street, right in the heart of Oxford’s Christmas events.

Jericho Coffee Traders, Warlands Cycles, and Spanner Works will operate from the Council-owned unit until the middle of January, when a new permanent tenant is due to move into the unit. They will offer coffee, tasty treats, and the chance to find out about electric bikes and motorbikes and the locations of the shops in West Oxford.

Businesses were invited to be part of the scheme during Network Rail and Council business engagement sessions.

The three businesses champion sustainability, with unique and innovative ways to live or make more conscious decisions. The launch of the pop-up shop will coincide with the council’s Go Electric Oxford City event, taking place on Broad Street on 1 November, giving Warlands Cycles and Spanner Works a chance to showcase their electric vehicle offer.

The three-month pop-up aims to highlight the variety of businesses on Botley Road that remain open and trading through the road closure.

The Council’s services company, ODS, completed a temporary refit of the unit to ensure safety and comfort before a full refit begins with the new long-term tenant.

The pop-up is part of the Council’s wider strategy to activate vacant city centre units, which also includes temporary shops, artwork, and charity displays to maintain a vibrant streetscape during letting and refurbishment periods.

The pop-up shop is located at 8 Broad Street.

Comment

“The pop-up shop is a great example of how we can bring energy and innovation into the city centre while supporting our local businesses. Botley Road traders have such a diverse range of offers, but we know the road closure has made it challenging for them to reach new customers.

This city centre space will help them connect with new customers, showcase their products, and be part of Oxford’s festive buzz. I'm excited to see the pop-up bring fresh life to a temporarily vacant unit and celebrate our local business community.”

Councillor Chewe Munkonge, Cabinet Member for a Healthy, Fairer Oxford and Small Business Champion

“Botley traders are excited to open a pop shop on 8 Broad Street . The 3 businesses involved are Spanners Works Garage that will showcase a selection of Zero Emission mopeds, Warlands bike shop - that will showcase a range of bicycles, and Jerico Coffee Traders that will sell a selection of artisan coffees.”

Zack Iqbal, Owner of Spanner Works Garage

“There’s a fantastic array of small businesses located on Botley Road and we’re delighted to be working with them to provide a platform to reach a wider audience in the heart of the city with this pop-up, alongside Oxford City Council.

“Since we reset the programme of work at Botley Road in January this year we have hit all our key milestones, most recently with the opening of the improved walkway which improves access for all, and we remain committed to opening the road in August next year.

“The work we are undertaking is vital to transforming rail travel in the city and enabling projects such as the reopening of the Cowley Branch Line, which was confirmed last week, and East-West Rail.”

Giles Clark, principal programme sponsor for Network Rail
