Oxford City Council and ODS are celebrating six successful months of their partnership with Recycling Solutions, which provides a free kerbside collection of textiles across Oxford.
Between the launch of the service in January, and July, Oxford residents have recycled over 17 tonnes of textiles – a fantastic achievement that is helping reduce household waste, deter fly-tipping, and protect the environment. That’s a brilliant effort – thank you, Oxford!
Recycling Solutions is a family-run company that’s worked with councils and charities across the UK since 2007. Every month, they divert at least 200,000kg of textiles from landfill and support good causes, including Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
Comment
“We had to remove the majority of our bring banks due to fly-tipping; but with nowhere to recycle textiles, contamination levels in the blue bins went up. Through our partnership with Recycling Solutions, we’re filling that recycling gap. And by using the service your recycling efforts will also help keep the Thames Valley Air Ambulance in the air. This service is a win for our residents, a win for the environment, and a win for a vital local charity.
“Please keep up the momentum. Book your free collection today and help us recycle even more textiles.”
Nigel Chapman, Cabinet Member for Citizen Focused Services and Council Companies“This is a great initiative which gives wide-ranging benefits for the residents of Oxford. Over seventeen tonnes of textiles collected, and finding a new use.
“Thank you, Oxford, and please keep using this fantastic service.”
Oliver Hearn, Head of Waste and Recycling at ODS
How the service works
Residents can book a free kerbside collection through the Oxford City Council website. Recycling Solutions will confirm when and where to leave items out, with weekly collections organised by location.
Accepted items include clothing, shoes, handbags, linens, duvets, towels, and more – as long as they’re clean and dry. Items not accepted include rugs, mats, and upholstered furniture.
Alternative recycling options
For those who prefer not to use the kerbside service, there’s a 24/7 textiles recycling bank at Rosehill Community Centre, and items can also be taken to Redbridge Household Waste Recycling Centre. Donating to charity shops, passing items on to friends and family, or repurposing them at home are also encouraged.
The journey of your textiles
Collected textiles are reused or recycled ethically. Quality clothing is resold second-hand (primarily in Ukraine), while end-of-life items are repurposed into industrial materials, insulation, and new fibres – ensuring zero waste. Proceeds from collections directly support Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
