Oxford City Council has welcomed the decision by Cherwell District Council to approve plans for a new stadium for Oxford United on land known as the Triangle, just south of Kidlington roundabout.

The planning application was formally approved by Cherwell District Council’s Planning Committee today (14 August). The proposal includes a purpose-built, 16,000-seat stadium that will provide a permanent home for the club as well as wider community benefits for Oxfordshire.

“I welcome with huge relief Cherwell District Council’s Planning Committee approval for the new stadium application. Oxford City Council has long supported Oxford United’s ambition to move to a new, purpose-built, modern stadium.

“Oxford United’s tenure at the Kassam Stadium is running out. It’s urgent that the plans now move forward. This decision has provided a clear pathway to the construction of a modern facility that Oxford United and its fans deserve. It secures the future of the club and will offer a host of economic and social benefits for the area.”

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council

The development will include a 180-bedroom hotel, restaurant, conference centre, health and well-being space, gym, and a community plaza. The project is expected to deliver significant benefits, including the creation of new jobs, improved transport connections, enhanced green space, and increased support for local charities, sports clubs, and schools.

The announcement follows the recent decision to grant Oxford United a two-year extension to remain at the Kassam Stadium, providing time for the transition to the new home.

Oxford City Council remains committed to supporting Oxford United and ensuring that the stadium development continues to deliver lasting benefits for fans and the wider community.
