The amount of benefit you could get depends on:

  • how many children you have and their ages (called dependents)
  • whether you have a partner
  • how many other adults living in your house and their income (called non-dependants)
  • how many sub-tenants/lodgers living in your house and how much rent do they pay you
  • how much income and savings you and/or your partner have
  • if anyone in your household is sick or disabled
  • if you and/or your partner are a full-time carer
  • how many bedrooms are in your property
  • if you or your partner require someone to stay to provide regular overnight care (providing there is an extra bedroom available for them to use)
  • how much rent you pay
  • whether your rent includes fuel bills meals or water charges
  • how much Council Tax you pay

Local Housing Allowance (LHA)

The LHA applies to tenants renting from a private landlord (unless your rent includes meals or you rent a caravan or boat). It does not apply to anyone renting from the council or a housing association.

For current rates and more information see Local Housing Allowance.

Under-occupying Social Housing

If you are treated as under-occupying social housing, the eligible rent will be reduced. For more information see Under-occupying social housing.

Benefits Cap

There is a limit on the total amount of benefit that most people of working age can get.

The exact amount can only be worked out after considering the circumstances of the individual claim.

For more information see Benefit Cap and you can use the Benefits Calculator on the GOV.UK website to estimate the amount of benefit to which you may be entitled.
