As a leaseholder or shared owner, Oxford City Council is responsible for insuring the structure of your home. You are responsible for insuring your personal belongings and contents.

This page explains what buildings insurance we provide, how to make a claim and what you need to insure yourself.

Buildings insurance

Building insurance covers damage or loss caused to the structure of your home, including fixtures and fittings, by certain insured risks.

If your home is unoccupied, our buildings insurance policy requires you to take reasonable steps to protect it. For example, you must:

  • keep doors and windows secure
  • prevent frozen pipes by draining the water system or keeping the heating on low, especially overnight

How to make a claim

If you need to make a claim, contact Zurich Municipal:

You will need the:

  • policyholder name: Oxford City Council
  • policy number: QLA-18H070-0153

If you require a copy of the cover note for your property, email landlordservices@oxford.gov.uk. Make sure to include your property reference.

Home contents insurance

You are responsible for insuring the contents of your home, including:

  • furniture
  • carpets, curtains and bedding
  • clothes and jewellery
  • appliances
  • pictures and decorations

You should insure your belongings against loss or damage due to fire, flood, theft or accidental damage.

We are not liable for any damage to or theft of your possessions.

Third-party cover

We strongly recommend including third-party cover in your contents insurance policy.

This protects you if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property. For example, if water from an overflowing tap damages a neighbour’s flat.
