Utility companies are responsible for most manhole covers in Oxford. If you report a problem to us, we'll notify the company responsible. If it's dangerous, we arrange to make it safe.
A missing or severly damaged manhole cover can be a significant safety risk and is an emergency if it presents an immediate danger (e.g. in the carriageway, near a school or in a poorly lit area).
If there's a safety risk:
- report the manhole immediately by telephone - contact emergency services if you're unsure who is responsible
- keep a safe distance
- warn others nearby but only if it's safe to do so (e.g. pedestrians)
- do not put yourself at risk
- never attempt to cover or fix it yourself
