All local planning authorities in England are required to prepare, maintain and publish a brownfield register which should be updated annually.
The brownfield register identifies all previously developed brownfield sites with full or outline planning permission. It also contains sites that may be considered as appropriate for residential development, having regard to local and national policy. A brownfield site is included in the register where it: has an area of 0.25 hectares; is promoted; is achievable; and is suitable for residential development.
Oxford's Brownfield Register was last updated May 2025.
See the Oxford Brownfield Register.
The location of sites included on the register can be viewed using the interactive map Brownfield Register sites.
The National Planning Practice Guidance on GOV.UK provides further information on brownfield registers.
