León, Nicaragua - our twin city since 1986

Building in León, Nicaragua

León, the former capital and second-largest city of Nicaragua, stands out as a key intellectual and political hub. It hosts the Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN), the oldest university in Central America, founded in 1813, and the stunning baroque Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of León.

Nicaragua faces natural challenges like volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and tidal waves, significantly impacting the poorer communities.

The Oxford León Association and Trust (OLAT) organises fundraising events to aid charities in León, focusing on providing clean water, agricultural education, and projects to support children and families experiencing poverty. Cultural exchanges are a key part of OLAT's work, and a highlight is the annual performance of 'La Misa Campesina', the Nicaraguan "Peasant Mass".
