Council closes fast food takeaway for multiple food hygiene failures

A fast food takeaway was closed for two days under Oxford City Council’s emergency powers after a routine food hygiene inspection found multiple food hygiene failures throughout the premises.

The council’s decision to close the takeaway was supported by Oxford Magistrates’ Court.

Grillers & Pizzas on Cowley Road was closed and issued with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice on Wednesday 1 August after officers found filthy conditions, no hot water, contamination risks and heavy fly activity.

The business was closed for two days and was only allowed to reopen when the council’s environmental health Officers were satisfied that the risks to health had been removed.

Councillor Alex Hollingsworth, Board Member for Planning and Transport, said: “Protecting the public is our number one priority. When dangerous conditions like these are found we will always take the necessary action to ensure customers are not put at risk. The council’s environmental health officers are working with the proprietor of the business to improve standards and ensure future compliance with food hygiene regulations.”
