Oxford Student Union are collaborating with Marks Out Of Tenancy to help change the private rental experience for the better.
Marks Out Of Tenancy is a review website for renters to rate and review their tenancy, providing a platform for honest and clear reviews of the rental experience – spanning the landlord, letting agent, rental property and neighbourhood.
Quote from Thomas Barringer, VP Charities and Community, Oxford Student Union: “Renting a house as a student in Oxford is difficult. This is often the first time students rent, and information comparing different letting agents, landlords and houses is hard to come by. With Marks Out Of Tenancy, students can have a better idea of where they’re going to be calling home for the next year before they sign anything.”
Students represent a large, valuable and captive customer base for the rental market. Multiple occupancy households are the norm, conditions may be worse, things stay broken longer... but it doesn’t have to be like this.
Marks Out Of Tenancy was created to help provide knowledge and enable tenants to make better decisions about the places we choose to call ‘home’.
With 28% of Oxford households living in private rented accommodation (1), Oxford City Council recognise Marks Out Of Tenancy as a valuable tool enabling positive change for renters in the city.
Cllr Alex Hollingsworth, Board Member for Planning and Regulatory Services, said: “Everyone should have the opportunity to live in a decent home which is safe, warm and secure. Poor quality housing has a negative impact on the physical and mental health of the people who live in it.
“The City Council sets and enforces minimum standards for Oxford’s private rented sector housing. This new scheme for tenants to rate their experience of renting a home will help to apply pressure to the poorest landlords to improve towards the standards of the best. We must continue to tackle poor quality housing, to benefit the health of all Oxford’s residents and the quality of the city environment.”
The platform is open, fair and balanced, where landlords are encouraged to engage positively by responding to reviews.
Marks Out Of Tenancy is built on clarity and altruism. Share your story so others may learn how to best navigate the rental experience, and give your landlord a chance to make things right, or let them know when they've made a great home for you.
