After Big Ben's chimes fade away

Published: Thursday, 28th December 2017

The chimes of midnight will herald in the New Year and party goes will continue to welcome 2018 into the early hours, but 1 January is a normal working day for some — including our street cleaners.

The City Council's street cleaners will be out and about from the early morning to ensure that all the litter left behind by revellers is cleared away as soon as  possible. And they'll continue hard at work through the morning and afternoon to make sure Oxford is spick and span in time for the start of the January sales.

Cllr John Tanner, Board Member for a Clean and Green Oxford, said: "About 24 of our street scene staff will be tidying up the city centre after the previous night's festivities. I want to thank them for their dedication. We want people to enjoy themselves but would ask that everybody takes their litter home with them or uses one of the many litter bins we provide.

"And the latest bins in Cornmarket use solar power to compact the rubbish so they won't overflow - please make sure you put all your litter in there and let's start 2018 the way we mean to carry on - litter free."
