New Housing Assistance and Disabled Adaptations Policy out for consultation

Published: Tuesday, 31st October 2017

Our Home Improvement Agency (HIA) has a new Housing Assistance and Disabled Adaptations Policy now out for consultation.

The HIA wants to widen eligibility for Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs), to improve delivery and reduce waiting times for DFG applications. This change will enable HIA to develop a simplified system which could deliver small-scale adaptations more quickly.

The following changes are proposed:

  • to introduce an Adapted Homes Grant - works paid for under this grant will not be subject to a means test of a disabled occupant's resources. A disabled occupant will be entitled to receive a full grant to cover the cost of the eligible works up to £5,000 (including any fees and VAT)
  • to introduce a Safe and Secure Grant - low income households will have quick access to a grant to carry out a wide range of minor adaptations and small repairs which will reduce risks and accidents around the home, promote independent living and assist with hospital discharge or prevent hospital admission. The maximum grant is £1,000
  • to increase the DFG discretionary grant from £5,000 to £10,000 - discretionary grants will be available for people with a nil contribution from the mandatory DFG prescribed test of resources. This grant can be used to top up DFG works costing more than £30,000, and can also be a more flexible grant which meets disabled people’s needs.

The consultation is open until 16 November 2017.
