Oxford City Council places a high priority on combatting fraud and now its innovative anti-fraud initiatives have been recognised by the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation (IRRV).

At a ceremony last week in Telford the City Council investigation service scooped the IRRV award for Excellence in Corporate Fraud, cementing its reputation as the best counter-fraud team in the UK.

The Awards Panel set out to recognise organisations that showed that they have excelled in preventing corporate fraud. The winning organisation needed to show evidence of innovation and enterprise and demonstrate improved and maintained performance.

Oxford City Council’s investigation service is one of the highest achieving corporate fraud teams in the country. It operates as a successful commercial entity, and markets their services to both the public and private sector.

Councillor Ed Turner, the City Council’s Deputy Leader and Board Member for Finance, Asset Management and Public Health, said: “Our investigation service has uncovered nearly £4 million of fraud through its diligent work.

“The service has broken new ground with ambitious projects, innovation, technology and partnership working, in both the public and private sector. Winning this award is recognition at a national level of the work they are doing and I want to congratulate the team for gaining this well-deserved award.”

Scott Warner, Oxford City Council’s Investigations Manager, added: “We are elated to win this professional accolade. Councils from all over the UK submitted entries in the category and the competition was strong, so we are especially proud to be recognised as the top performer. We will continue to deliver excellent results for the City Council, and the partner organisations who we work with.”
