Oxford City Council’s Investigation Service has joined forces with CIFAS to help prevent fraud.

CIFAS is a not-for-profit company working to protect individuals, public bodies, charities and businesses from fraud and financial crime. They work with a range of UK organisations to protect their customers and the public. You can find out more about CIFAS from their website

The City Council aims to better secure its money and assets by accessing information about known fraudsters. This means sharing information with CIFAS about proven fraud cases and searching CIFAS data to risk assess new applications. CIFAS will ensure that the data it holds is used lawfully.

Cllr Ed Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Asset Management said: "The City Council's Investigation Service is constantly looking to find new methods to uncover fraudulent use of  public funds. This new partnership with CIFAS will open up new ways to track down the fraudsters and protect the public purse.

"The team has a fine track record in uncovering criminal activity both for the City Council and also on behalf of other districts and other authorities. It is testament to the Council's commitment to combating public sector fraud in all its aspects and ensuring public funds are used for the benefit of those who are entitled to them."
