Come and help paint Barton’s community mural

Barton Neighbourhood Centre is inviting local residents to the first painting session for Barton’s community mural.

The session will take place at the Neighbourhood Centre this Saturday, 23 March, from 11 am until 4 pm.

The new mural will cover the external wall of the sports centre and has been designed by local artist Merlin Porter using ideas from Barton residents.

Merlin will be working with the Barton Art Club to draw the design onto the wall, and people who live and work in Barton are invited to come along and help colour it in. All ages and abilities are welcome, and free refreshments and painting materials will be provided. The first 30 volunteers will also be able to claim a £1 lunch at Eatwells Café.

Merlin will be on hand to help and will award vouchers to the two volunteers he thinks have been the most dedicated on the day. These vouchers have been kindly donated by Eatwells Café and Barton Chippy.

Barton Neighbourhood Centre is expecting to hold at least one further mural painting date and will announce any future dates after this weekend.

Councillor Marie Tidball, Board Member for Supporting Local Communities, said: “I’m really pleased to invite people who live and work in Barton to come and help paint the new community mural. I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed their time, efforts and ideas. Saturday should be a fun day out for people of all ages and abilities, and there’s no need to bring anything as free refreshments and painting materials will be available. Spread the word and come to the Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday.”

Artist Merlin Porter said: "I am really impressed by the Barton community’s friendly and enthusiastic spirit. I can't wait to help them turn their ideas into a reality and celebrate Barton with this big mural. No art skill is required and you're welcome to just have a look and a chat if that is all you fancy."
