If you or your partner are severely disabled and have no dependent children, your housing benefit will be based on the one-bedroom Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rate, even in shared accommodation.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible you must receive one of these benefits:

  • Disability Living Allowance (middle or highest care component)
  • Attendance Allowance (any rate)
  • Personal Independence Payment (standard or enhanced care components)
  • Industrial or War Disablement benefit with mobility or attendance increase

Additionally, you mustn't have any non-dependants living with you, unless:

  • a non-dependant receiving one of the benefits listed above
  • a non-dependant who is registered or certified blind

No one can be receiving Carers Allowance for caring for you. However, if you require an overnight carer, an additional room is allowed in calculating your LHA. For detailed information on calculating your LHA, visit our LHA calculation page.
