Are you interested in selling your former council property?

We have special funding available to buy back a select number of former council properties. This gives you the opportunity to sell your property directly to Oxford City Council.

This page explains how the scheme works and why selling your former council home to us could be beneficial to you.

Properties we are looking for

We are particularly interested in buying 1-bedroom properties, but we will also consider other sizes too.

Who can apply

You may be eligible if:

  • you are the leaseholder of a former council property
  • the property will be sold with vacant possession and you are able to move out when the sale completes

We cannot buy a property if:

  • you want to remain living in the property
  • the property is currently tenanted, unless the tenants have suitable alternative accommodation arranged
  • the sale could result in homelessness

Benefits of selling to us

Selling your home to the Council may be simpler than selling on the open market.

Benefits may include:

  • no estate agent fees
  • no property chain
  • a quicker cash-based sale
  • no waiting for mortgage approvals
  • direct communication with a single point of contact in the Council

How the scheme works

  1. Contact us to discuss your property.
  2. We will carry out an initial assessment to:
    • review the information and photographs you provide
    • consider the demand for your home, including its location and size
  3. If your property meets our requirements in principle, we may make an initial offer subject to a survey.
  4. We will arrange for our surveyor to inspect the property.
  5. If the survey is satisfactory, we will confirm the purchase price and begin the conveyancing process.

We cannot guarantee that we will make an offer on every property we survey.

What you will pay

As the seller, you are responsible for your own legal fees.

You will not need to pay estate agent fees.

How to apply

Contact the Affordable Housing Development Officer if you are interested in taking part in the leaseholder property buyback scheme.
