If you have no electricity supply this could be because:

  • there has been a power cut
  • you have not paid your electricity bill
  • the trip switch has switched itself off

Check these things first.

If there is a power cut

Check whether your neighbours have power in their properties. Note, if you live in a house/bungalow in a street of properties, it may be your neighbour 3 doors down only.

If so, then contact SSE to find out about power cuts in the area.

If you have not paid your electricity bill

This is usually only with card/prepayment meter - check your meter.

If the trip switch has switched itself off

The fuse board is made up of many fuses or circuit breakers (MCBs) serving different circuits. Usually something like:

  • lights downstairs
  • lights upstairs
  • sockets downstairs
  • sockets upstairs
  • cooker
  • immersion heater

If you have MCBs (small switches) in your fuse board, they are on when they are in the up position, including the main (larger) switches or trip switches. If you have MCBs, and any are in the down (off) position, trying turning the switches on (up) again.

If the switch will not reset, a faulty appliance is probably causing the error. Unplug the appliance you were most recently using when the power went off and try resetting. If this still doesn't work, unplug everything from the sockets and try to reset the trip switch.

Put the appliances back in, one at a time to check them.

If it will not reset you probably have a fault with that appliance. Try it in a different socket to confirm. If it trips the switch again, it's the appliance; if it doesn't it may be the socket. Try a different appliance in the socket.

If it doesn't reset, call us on 01865 249811.

If it is a lighting circuit and you have no lights and it will be dark soon call us on 01865 249811.

If the power goes off every time you switch on your cooker then the appliance may be faulty.

Remember, your appliances are your responsibility. We will only maintain an appliance if we installed it. If our engineer calls and finds that an appliance is causing the power to go off then you will be charged for their visit.

If you have had electrical work carried out in the property and our engineer finds that someone else has carried out work in the property which is causing a problem then you will be charged for their visit and for any repairs that have to be done.
