Grenoble, France - Twinned 1989

A dynamic modern city with a picturesque old town at its heart, Grenoble is home to both an ancient university and a hi-tech science hub. After the Second World War, it was one of the fastest-growing cities in France, incorporating the neighbouring valley communities to form a metropolitan area of more than half a million people.

The 'Capital of the French Alps' lies on the Isère River with mountain ranges on all sides. The city is home to many museums, galleries and green spaces, with the old fort of the Bastille offering a breath-taking view of the surrounding mountains.

Since 1989 there have been regular exchanges involving educational, sporting, business, environmental and cultural groups. Oxford-Grenoble Association and its French counterpart Alliance Grenoble-Oxford help forge links, organizing memorable visits, supporting their fellow citizens' interests and providing a meeting point for French and British people at home by arranging social events.
