Abandoned vehicles can be an eyesore and may risk public health if damaged or vandalised. We are responsible for removing abandoned vehicles from open land and roads (including private lands and roads).
This page explains how to report an abandoned vehicle at FixMyStreet, what to include in your report and what action we will take. Also learn how to claim your vehicle if we attach a Notice of Removal.
When to report a vehicle as abandoned
Report the vehicle if it:
- has expired road tax
- has been stationary for a significant amount of time
- is significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy, for example has flat tires, missing wheels or broken windows
- is burnt out
- is missing a number plate
What to include in your report
Please include as much information as possible, including:
- the location of the vehicle (you can pinpoint the exact location on the FixMyStreet map)
- the make, colour and registration number
- the tax status - check if a vehicle is taxed on the GOV.UK website
- approximately how long it's been there
- any damage that may cause a risk to public health
What happens next
When we receive a report of an abandoned vehicle, we will:
- visit the vehicle and initiate an investigation within 1 day of your report
- take photographic evidence of the vehicle upon inspection
- attach a Notice of Removal on the vehicle's windscreen (If our investigation concludes the vehicle has been abandoned)
- arrange for its removal if no owner comes forward

Report the problem at FixMyStreetHow to claim a reported vehicle
If your vehicle has been reported as abandoned and you wish to claim it you must contact us within 24 hours and be able to give necessary information.
