We recognise and value the diversity of our workforce and communities and want to ensure that all the attributes, talents and skills available throughout our community are recognised when employment opportunities arise.
We take every possible step to ensure our employees, and potential employees, are all treated fairly, given equal opportunity and support appropriate to their needs. All employment decisions including those on recruitment, selection, promotion, training and career development, are based solely on objective criteria.
We oppose all forms of discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. Our ambition is to have a workforce representative of the communities we deliver our services to.
For more information on our workplace equality programmes see our work on equality and diversity.
Investors in People Gold Champion Organisation
In 2014 we joined an elite group of organisations across the UK by achieving Investors in People Gold accreditation and becoming an IiP Champion. Only 7 per cent of IiP accredited organisations have attained the gold standard for their commitment in realising staff potential and understanding that it is good people who make great business.
Investors in People is the UK's leading accreditation for business improvement through people management and all our good work in communicating with our employees, driving improvement, delivering results and our focus on developing our staff is recognised by our Gold Champion status.
Additionally, in June 2015 we received the ultimate accolade at the IiP annual awards ceremony by winning the Gold employer (+250 staff) 2015 and the Overall IiP winner 2015. These prestigious awards truly reflect what a great work environment the Council offers to its employees.
Visit the Investors in People website for more information.
Living Wage Employer
We are an accredited Living Wage Employer.
This means that every member of staff in our organisation earns not just the minimum wage but the Living Wage.
The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually, based on the cost living in the UK.
We believe that every member of staff deserves a Living Wage. You can find out more on the Living Wage website.
We have joined over 1,250 other employers across the UK in signing the Mindful Employer Charter for Employers who are Positive about Mental Health. This voluntary agreement is aimed at increasing awareness of mental health in the workplace through:
- Committing dedicated funding to employee Health & Wellbeing including workshops on mindfulness and resilience
- Effective Occupational Health referrals
- An Employee Assistance programme
- Service teams commissioning specialist Mental Health First Aid training delivered by RESTORE to raise awareness of mental health
- Accredited ‘Two Ticks’ employer
Being a Mindful Employer shows the long-term commitment of the Council to embedding best employer practices in recruiting and retaining valued and talented members of staff and showing a positive and enabling attitude about providing appropriate on-going support.
Two Ticks Disability Symbol
We have been accredited with the Two Ticks Disability Symbol.
If an employer uses this symbol, it means they are positive about employing disabled people and will be keen to know about your abilities.
The symbol is awarded by Jobcentre Plus to employers in England, Scotland and Wales who have made commitments to employ, keep and develop the abilities of disabled staff.
You can find out more about the Two Ticks Disability Symbol and the criteria on the GOV.UK website.
