We carry out a free gas safety check every year in council homes with gas appliances. This is a legal requirement and helps keep you and your household safe.
Our engineers are Gas Safe registered. The service includes a full inspection of your heating system and any gas appliances we have provided.
Book your annual gas service
We will send you a reminder letter when your annual gas service is due. Please wait until you receive this letter before contacting us as we cannot arrange appointments earlier.
To schedule your appointment, speak to customer services. Online booking is not currently available.
If you can't make your appointment, contact us as soon as possible to rearrange.
If we are unable to access your property after several attempts, we may take legal action to gain access for servicing and recharge the cost of this action to you.
Prepare for your appointment
Before your appointment, you should:
- clear access around your boiler and any gas appliances
- if you use a prepayment gas meter, make sure you have at least £5 credit so we can test your system
- make sure someone aged 18 or over is at home for the appointment
What happens during the service
A gas engineer will:
- inspect your boiler and any gas appliances we have installed
- check the flues and ventilation
- test your carbon monoxide alarm
- make sure your heating and hot water are working safely
The service usually takes 30 and 90 minutes, depending on your heating system.
We only service council‑owned gas appliances. You are responsible for servicing any gas appliances you own.
Why an annual service is important
An annual gas service helps to:
- prevent gas leaks
- reduce the risk of fire or explosions
- help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
- make sure your heating and hot water are working safely and efficiently
Gas programmers
Some council homes have a gas programmer fitted to help make sure annual gas safety checks are completed on time.
The programmer will:
- alert you 30 days before your gas service is due
- sound an alarm if your service becomes overdue
- limit your heating and hot water until the service is completed
The engineer will reset the programmer after your annual gas service.
