If you rent a council garage from us, you may only use it as a domestic garage to keep a private motor vehicle.
To store household items and others belongings in your garage, you must get written permission from us first.
What you can store
You can request permission to store:
- bicycles
- household items
- garden tools and equipment
- DIY equipment
- other personal belongings
You may not store:
- food and drink
- petrol, paraffin, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or other flammable liquids
- any materials that may create a fire or safety risk
You must comply with the garage licence conditions.
How to apply for permission
To apply for permission:
- download the Garages permission for storage letter template
- complete and sign the form
- return it by post to the address on the form
You will need:
- your name and contact details
- your garage number and location
- a list of the main items you plan to store
You must not store any items in the garage until you have received written permission from us.
What happens after you apply
After you submit your request, we will review the information provided.
If your request is approved, we will send you written confirmation. You can then use the garage to store the approved items.
If your request is not approved, we will explain why.
Protecting your belongings
Council garages are often older buildings and are not designed to the same standard as modern storage facilities. They may be affected by damp, condensation or pests, which could damage stored items.
You should take suitable precautions to protect your possessions.
To help keep your belongings in good condition:
- store soft furnishings or clothes in sealed polythene bags
- wrap wood / plyboard items in bubble wrap and seal with suitable tape
- store boxes on used pallets
- allow a reasonable amount of airflow between storage containers
Household items left in a garage for an extended period of time will deteriorate. You should check your possessions regularly.
