There three sets of elections due to take place on Thursday 2 May 2024.

They are:

  • one councillor to each of the 24 wards on the City Council (except Blacbird Leys ward where, on the resignation of Councillor Humberstone, there will be two vacancies)
  • a Police and Crime Commissioner for the Thames Valley Police Area
  • elections to two parish councils - Littlemore and Risinghurst & Sandhills

Key Dates

Below are the key dates for the election (each notice will be under a link as they are published)::

  • Publication of Notice of Election - Tuesday 26 March 2024
  • Receipt of Nominations - from 26 March (each working day between 10am and 4pm) with the deadline being 4pm on Friday 5 April 2024
  • Publication of Statement of Persons Nominated – 4pm on Monday 8 April
  • Publication of the list of election agents for City Council candidates
  • Last date for registration - 11.59pm on Tuesday 16 April 2024
  • Last date for receipt of postal applications - 5pm on Wednesday 17 April 2024
  • Last date for receipt of Voter Authority Certificate applications - 5pm on Wednesday 24 April 2024
  • Last date for receipt of proxy vote applications - 5pm on Wednesday 24 April 2024
  • Polling Day - 7am to 10pm on Thursday 2 May 2024
  • Verification of all polls and local election counts - Friday 3 May 2024
  • Police and Crime Commissioner count - Saturday 4 May

Registering, Voter ID and absent voting

All electors who are registered and eligible to vote will receive a poll card in late March 2024.

If you’ve recently moved or turned 18, you may not be registered. You can do this online at Register to Vote.

If you wish to vote at the polling station you will be required to show an accepted form of photographic ID before being issued with a ballot paper, to find out more information on what forms of ID are accepted or how to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate visit our Voter ID page.

If you are unable to attend the polling station, you can apply to vote by post or you can apply to appoint a proxy. These links are to pages that enable you to apply online, which is a new provision. If you need a form then you can download a postal vote form or proxy vote form or conatct us for paper form to be sent.

EU citizens' voting rights

Under provisions in the Election Act 2022 the voting rights of EU citizens will be changed. However, these changes will not happen until after the elections on 2 May 2024. So those EU citizens registered will receive a poll card and be able to vote in the normal way. The Council will be contacting affected EU citizens after the elections about the changes to their franchise.

Police and Crime Commissioner election

The Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) is responsible for the overall conduct of the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner. This includes liaising with candidates and agents..

The Chief Executive of West Berkshire Council has been appointed as the PARO for the Thames Valley Police Area. Prospective candidates should contact the West Berkshire Council Electoral Services Team for further information.

Counts

The count for the City Council and parish elections will take place on Friday 3 May 2024.

The count for the PCC elections will take place on Saturday 4 May 2024.
