Changes to Voting at Polling Stations

The Elections Act 2022 introduces significant changes to voting procedures in the UK. Starting from 4 May 2023, voters will need to show photo ID at polling stations for the following elections:

  • UK Parliamentary (General) elections
  • local elections and referendums in England
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales
  • UK recall petitions

For more details about the voter ID requirement, visit the Electoral Commission's website.

Acceptable Photo ID

Valid forms of photo ID include a passport or driving licence. The ID does not need to be current, but the photo should still resemble you. A complete list of acceptable photo ID is available on the Electoral Commission's website.

No Photo ID?

If you lack a valid photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) for free:

Remember, you must be registered to vote before applying for a VAC. Please apply for a VAC only if necessary, as it incurs taxpayer expense.

Current ID Doesn't Resemble You?

If your photo ID no longer looks like you, you're eligible to apply for a VAC.
