How to classify your film
Films that are to be shown to a public audience must be given a classification rating.
If you're a film maker or promoter, you can apply to either the:
- British Board of Film Classification
- local authority for the area where the film is being shown
Making an application
To apply for the classification or reclassification of a film to be shown in Oxford, you must make your request in writing at least 20 working days before the film is to be shown.
We can only guarantee a film will be classified in time for it to be screened if it receives the request within the 20 working day period. Please note that any classification of a film made by us is only applicable when the film is shown in Oxford.
You must:
- provide a written synopsis of the film via email or letter to the address detailed below
- provide a DVD copy of the film or a secure online link to the film so it can be viewed on a website

A link or electronic file of your film should be emailed to licensing@oxford.gov.uk.
Fees
The fee for this service is £12.00 per 15 minutes and £12.00 for the film classification certificate that we issue once the film has been certified.
Payments will be made by credit/debit card once an email request hase been received. Please supply telephone contact information in your correspondence so we can call you to take the necessary payment.
