We collaborate with Oxfordshire County Council, the transport authority for Oxfordshire, to grit main roads in Oxford. Gritting occurs as needed from November to April, guided by a dedicated ice alert system for accurate ground temperature forecasts.

Our focus is on keeping essential services operational, including gritting routes to hospitals, principal roads and walkways, hilly areas, and essential bus routes. However, not every road in the city is covered by this service.

The extent of gritting depends on the weather severity.

Oxfordshire County Council handles gritting main roads across Oxfordshire. For salting updates and gritting route maps, visit their Winter Maintenance page.

When snow is expected, we grit high footfall footpaths across Oxford, including:

  • the city centre (Cornmarket, High Street, St Aldate’s, Queen Street, etc.)
  • link routes to the train station and Gloucester Green bus station
  • main shopping areas, like Cowley Road
  • cycle route along Marston Ferry Road

Grit bins are maintained alongside roads throughout Oxford for residents to use on transport networks.
