Hinksey Outdoor Heated Pool is being relined ready for outdoor swimming, thanks to £132,000 investment from Oxford City Council.

The work is taking place in March and April, with the pool aiming to be ready for opening by the end of April, subject to weather conditions. The liner can only be fitted during a dry spell with temperatures above 10°C, so the work could not start until early spring when the worst of the winter weather has passed.

Once the liner has been fitted the pool will need to be filled and brought up to swimming temperature of around 27°C, a process that takes around three weeks. The work is being overseen by the council’s leisure partner Fusion Lifestyle which manages the site, who are prioritising this work to open the pool in time for summer weather.

The investment is part of securing the long-term future of the popular pool. Last year a heat pump was installed to make the site more energy efficient, converting thermal energy from Hinksey Lake to reduce the reliance on gas boilers to heat the water and changing facilities at the outdoor pool. This is a carbon-saving upgrade with an added benefit of helping manage the rising cost of energy by significantly reducing gas consumption at the pool.

“A trip to Hinksey outdoor pool is a really popular part of life in Oxford. Swimming is great for your health, and swimming in the sun with friends and family is even better. Our investment in the liner and the heat pump means our residents can look forward to many more years of enjoying days by the pool.”

Councillor Chewe Munkonge, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Parks

“We would like to thank Oxford City Council for funding the replacement liner at Hinksey Outdoor Pool.  This will ensure it is ready for everyone to enjoy both in 2023 and beyond.”

Anthony Cawley, CEO of Fusion Lifestyle
