Oxford City Council is running a series of events to help residents find support with the cost of living crisis.
The events will give residents an opportunity to speak face to face with council staff and community groups who can help with problems including benefits, housing, debt and food support.
- 6 July 2022, 4pm to 7pm - Barton Neighbourhood Centre, Oxford OX3 9LS
- 12 July 2022, 1pm to 4pm - Rose Hill Community Centre, Oxford OX4 4HF
- 14 July 2022, 10am to 1pm - Blackbird Leys Community Centre, Oxford OX4 6HW
The events are drop-in sessions, so no appointment needed, and they are open to all residents across the city. People attending will be able to speak to staff from community larders, local advice centres and the council’s housing, council tax, welfare, energy advice teams and more.
The council and community partners have seen a rise in the number of people asking for help. This year people have been seen the end of the £20 uplift in universal credit, energy price rises, rising fuel costs and inflation at 9%. All these changes mean more people are struggling to make their money cover the basics.
“We want to make sure people are able to access the help they need, so our teams are going out to communities and neighbourhoods so people can speak to experts face to face. We know people are feeling anxious and worried. We want people to know that they’re not alone.”
“This cost of living crisis has been created by years of austerity, underinvestment and low-tax policies. It’s disgraceful that the government has allowed so many people in our city and country to be left on the brink of poverty, they’ve made many feel like their fault that they’re struggling to make ends meet. Oxford is a city where communities pull together to help each other without judgement. We’ve seen this most recently during the covid crisis. Council teams and community groups are working hard to make sure no one has to struggle alone.”
