Oxford City Council is planning to construct a new shared cycle and pedestrian path across Donnington Recreation Ground.

By creating a dedicated path the City Council is aiming to provide a route to cross the recreation ground that will be suitable for all-weather use. The path will provide a missing hard-surface link within the Boundary Brook and Meadow Lane off-road active travel route through this area of the city.

Creating a dedicated cycle route will help protect the popular community football pitches in the recreation ground. Oxford City Council has consulted regular users Donnington FC on the proposals.

The new path has been made possible with funding secured by the City Council and Oxfordshire County Council aimed at delivering improvements to pedestrian and cycling routes in Oxford and across Oxfordshire.

The path will enter the recreation ground through a new access on Meadow Lane and cross the field to meet Cavell Road. The current entrance from Meadow Lane in the north west of the ground will be retained for pedestrians only with a gate to prevent cyclists accessing it.

Comment

“The creation of cycle routes is crucial to making Oxford an even more cycle–friendly city. Getting more people cycling is key and one of the best ways to reduce congestion and pollution. And it helps people stay fit and healthy.

“This new route through Donnington Recreation Ground will offer both cyclists and pedestrians a convenient and accessible way to cross the park whilst also encouraging greater, more general use of the ground.”

Councillor Tom Hayes, Cabinet Member for Green Transport and Zero Carbon Oxford

A small number of trees will be removed to allow the path to connect to Meadow Lane. Replacement trees will be provided nearby to compensate for this.

The City Council is launching a consultation on the proposed path. The consultation will run from 16 May and will be available here from that date. Responses should be completed and returned by 5 June.

These improvements will be delivered by ODS, working with engineering consultant Stantec, who are designing the scheme.
