ODS and Oxford City Council are working with Podback, a new coffee pod recycling service, to enable residents to recycle their coffee pods using their kerbside recycling collection service.
Podback has been created in partnership with the biggest names in coffee pod systems, Nespresso, Nescafe Dolce Gusto and Tassimo.
Coffee pod sales in the UK have surged in popularity in recent years as consumers have developed a taste for luxury coffee at home. Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Podback found that more than a third (35 per cent) of coffee pod drinkers are unaware that pods can be recycled, while 90 per cent state that they’d like to be able to recycle their coffee pods through their usual household recycling.
From 9 August, Oxford residents will be able to recycle both plastic and aluminium coffee pods using free collection bags provided by Podback. For those residents who cannot access a kerbside service, a Collect+ service is available that allows consumers to drop off filled bags to a Collect+ store.
An information leaflet will be sent through residents’ doors in August signposting them to register for the new service, based on the types of coffee pods they use. Once registered, residents will be sent a roll of recycling bags and can start using them straight away by putting them out for kerbside collection, by placing on top of their blue recycling or green waste bin lid on their normal collection day.Once collected, the coffee pods will be sent for reprocessing to separate the packaging from the coffee grounds. The coffee grounds will be used to create soil improver and renewable energy. The plastic and aluminium will be recycled into new products.
The new service will help support the aim of Oxfordshire’s Environmental Prtnership to reduce residual waste and increase its recycling rate, as a county, to 65 per cent.
