Following the Prime Minister's announcement of travel restrictions last night the City Council will waive parking charges entirely for key workers in its city centre car parks.

"The Government message could not be clearer. If you are not a key worker you must stay at home and not undertake unnecessary travel. To support those key workers who are needed to keep our essential services running the City Council is suspending charges in our city centre car parks.

"We are asking key workers to please identify themselves by placing a note in their car window telling us which essential service they are working for."

Councillor Alex Hollingsworth, Cabinet Member for Planning and Sustainable Transport

The suspension of parking charges will apply to the City Centre car parks - Oxpens, Gloucester Green and Worcester Street - only. Where car parks are being used by people needing access to local shops, and therefore where allowing all day free parking would cause serious problems for vulnerable people, the situation will be kept under review.

Westgate Oxford is also offering free parking to NHS staff on production of their NHS card. Essential shops only remain open in Westgate, including Sainsbury’s, and Ned's Noodles for takeaway and deliveries only. Globe News (newsagent) is also open.
