A new wine shop and bar has opened in Oxford Covered Market.

The Market Cellar Door, which opened earlier this month (8/2), is a partnership between Teardrop Bar and Eynsham Cellars.

The new shop and bar, which has opened in the unit next to Teardrop Bar, will offer around 200 wines from all over the world, including a selection from England.

Six of the wines will be available on tap, providing people with the opportunity to buy a glass or to refill a bottle to take away. Currently, The Market Cellar Door has two reds, two whites, a sparking and a rosé on tap.

Both The Market Cellar Door and Teardrop Bar include a small amount of seating in front of their unit, and customers are encouraged to bring food from around the market – such as the nearby cheesemonger – to enjoy with their drink.

Teardrop Bar, which opened in the Covered Market in December 2018, is a micropub and serves ales brewed at Church Hanbrewery in West Oxfordshire.

Oxford City Council, which manages the Covered Market, is currently investing £3.1m into the market to secure its long-term future. The investment includes £1.8m to secure the roof for another 60 to 80 years, and £1.3m for internal refurbishment.

Oxford Covered Market, which first opened in November 1774 and is Grade II-listed, sells food, gifts, shoes, fashion, flowers and jewellery, and the market provides a unique showcase for the very best in local crafts, food and drink.

“We’re very excited to be in the Covered Market, working with Teardrop.

“The wine range we’ve put together is one we’re very proud of and it’s excellent value, whether you’re drinking in or taking home.

“We also encourage people to bring food with them from food shops all around the market to enjoy a glass here with.”

Oli Gauntlett, owner of Eynsham Cellars

“Bringing together grape and grain is a match made in Heaven.

“We want Teardrop Bar and The Market Cellar Door to become a new meeting point in Oxford – a place where people can enjoy a glass of wine or beer, some food from the neighbouring traders, and, most importantly, sit and chat and relax with friends.”

Luciana Gyuricza, owner of Teardrop Bar

“The Teardrop Bar was a fantastic addition to the Covered Market, and it’s great to see them team up with Eynsham Cellars to bring an even wider offer to the market.

“With Oxford Cheese Company, Bonners Fruit and Veg, and Pershore fishmongers just around the corner from the new unit, it is easier than ever to buy everything you need for a fantastic meal in one place – and all high-quality, locally produced and sustainable food and drink, without needless plastic packaging.”

Councillor Mary Clarkson, Cabinet Member for Culture and City Centre
