The Oxford Sustainability Index 2016 is an independent evaluation of Oxford’s environmental performance compared to other UK urban areas.
The index compares 10 environmental areas: carbon dioxide emissions, renewable energy, energy efficiency, transport, water, waste, air quality, sustainable land use, flood risk, and land quality.
It found that Oxford scores well in lowering carbon dioxide emissions and improving land use, but less well in making use of renewable energy and sustainable transport.
We are the first local authority in the UK to commission an independent review into an area’s environmental credentials.
In future, the Oxford Sustainability Index 2016 will be used to underpin our Local Plan, which defines how Oxford will develop in terms of housing, jobs and facilities over the next 20 years.
The index will also form the evidence base for a new Sustainability Strategy from the City Council, which will set out how Oxford can further improve its environmental performance over the next 20 years.
