Emergency beds for rough sleepers remain open due to sub-zero forecast

Published: Wednesday, 7th February 2018

The Met Office forecasts that the overnight weather temperature in Oxford will remain below zero tonight, Wednesday 7 February. This means that emergency beds for any rough sleeper who wants to come inside will continue to be available under our Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP).

Rough sleepers who want to access a SWEP bed need to present themselves at O’Hanlon House between 9 pm and 9:30 pm tonight.

SWEP beds will close on Thursday 8 February as the overnight forecast is for the temperature to rise above zero.

Oxford City Council, St Mungo’s and Homeless Oxfordshire will make a decision on whether to activate SWEP beds over the weekend on Friday 9 February.

As well as SWEP, ten extra beds are available for rough sleepers without a local connection under the Oxford WInter Night Shelter (OWNS). OWNS is operated by a group of Oxford churches and will be open until the end of March. Unlike SWEP, rough sleepers who want to access OWNS must be verified by the Oxford Street Population Outreach Team.
